Utrecht’s icon is Dom Tower, a must-see sight in the center of the city. And don’t forget the gothic Dom Church! Since 1382, Dom Tower is with its 112 meters the largest church tower in the Netherlands and visible from (almost) wherever you are in the city. The rule is that no building in the center may be higher than Dom Tower.
When you spend a day in Utrecht, you should definitely climb the 465 steps for a marvellous view all over Utrecht and surroundings, whilst listening to interesting stories about the tower and the neighbouring gothic Dom Church.

Dom Church and its beautiful garden
Dom Church is a medieval cathedral with high arches, copper chandeliers and a big organ. The use of colours – mostly grey, beige and brown – give the church a sober, though impressive, look. The stained-glass windows are mainly light as well, except for two large walls that show a colourful image.
Don’t forget to visit the garden. A small, peaceful herbs garden surrounded by low-arched galleries with views on Dom Tower and Dom Church.

DomUnder: Roman history underneath Domplein
You would expect Dom Church and Dom Tower to be connected. Though, when standing on Domplein you will see a rather big gap between the two. Here used to be the nave of the cathedral. Unfortunately, this part of the cathedral was destroyed during a tornado in 1674 and never rebuild.
Did you know that the history of Utrecht goes back all the way to Roman times? Underneath the square (Domplein) you can walk (with an enthusiastic guide) through archaeological excavations and see a Roman Castellum Traiectum. Buy your DOMunder tickets here.
City walk Nieuwegracht & Achter de Dom

Don’t only enjoy the view on Dom Church from Dom square but have a small walk via Nieuwegracht and Achter de Dom and be surprised on how big the church really is (and realise how big it would have been if the nave would still be intact). The streets behind the church are in itself a nice part of the city center to wander the streets. At least as beautiful as Oudegracht and far less busy.

Hidden-gem Flora’s Hof

Another nice spot is Flora’s hof. Standing in front of Dom Tower and Church you see a historic gateway to this little green oasis full of plants, in the shadow of the cathedral. The benches give the opportunity to enjoy this nice and quiet spot right in the middle of a busy part of downtown Utrecht.
